Puppy Obedience Training Center Homepage
Welcome to the Puppy Obedience Training Center website. This website is dedicated to providing high quality information and advice to new dog owners looking to train a puppy.
My Name Is John Hewitt and I have owned dogs my whole life. I can honestly say that all of my dogs have been a source of great happiness and fulfillment in my life. Having said that, there have been times when my dogs have caused me much frustration and anguish. Over the years I have had to deal with many of the common problems that all dog owners face including excessive aggression, barking, howling, whining, biting, digging, chewing furniture, jumping and over excitement, territorial behavior, separation anxiety, pulling on the leash, and inappropriate urination to name just a few.
I have come to realize that it is incredibly important to begin a consistent routine of puppy obedience training very early in a dog’s life. Starting puppy training early helps eliminate many of the problems that can develop over time, and lays the foundations for a happy and obedient dog. I have set up this website in order to share the knowledge that I have build up over the years and help new dog owners to learn the fundamentals of puppy obedience training.
My training philosophy focuses on using rewards and praise for good behavior, rather than excessive punishment. I have found that dogs tend to respond much better to positive rewards than they do to negative scolding. That’s not to say that you should never punish a disobedient dog, just that the most effective training techniques for cultivating a well behaved, happy dog seem to lie at the reward end of the spectrum. When punishment is necessary, try to use mild methods like ignoring your puppy, or anything else that your dog doesn’t particularly like, but avoid anything that is too traumatic for them. Also, please never hit your puppy, no matter how naughty their behavior becomes. This sort of violent treatment tends to cause far more problems than it solves and is the root cause of numerous biting and other aggressive attacks on people every year.
Obedience training a puppy requires a lot of time and patience, but the rewards are fantastic. By spending lots of time with your dog and implementing a few 10 minute sessions of obedience training every day, you will cultivate the obedient behavior that you desire. Also make sure that you give your dog enough exercise as they get older. This not only helps your dog avoid problems such as obesity, but the extra time you spend with your dog will allow you to implement further obedience training, and will also allow you to effectively monitor your dogs health and happiness.
